The district is offering a grade improvement opportunity for students' third quarter grade.  Students have the option to complete an extra credit assignment to earn 3, 4, or 5 points that will be added to the final grade for quarter 3 in reading, math, and science.

Please understand that this grade improvement opportunity is optional.

For reading and math, students can complete Iready lessons, just like they have done all year.  Between the dates of May 4 - May 11, students will access Iready through Clever and complete lessons that are based on your child's learning path determined by their benchmark results.

3 lessons completed with 85% mastery earns your child 3 points to their final third quarter grade.

4 lessons completed with 85% mastery earns your child 4 points to their final third quarter grade.

5 lessons completed with 85% mastery earns your child 5 points to their final third quarter grade.

Students must complete 3, 4, or 5 lessons in both reading and math to receive the extra credit for both subjects.  If a student only wants/needs the point in reading, then they only need to complete the reading Iready lessons.  If students want to earn the points in all three subjects, they will have to complete the Iready lessons in reading and in math, and then complete the science lesson as well.

If students do not have access to the internet, they may complete the paper pencil assignment in place of the online Iready lessons.  The paper/pencil assignment will be graded for accuracy and must meet the same guidelines as the online option.  If you need the paper/pencil version of the reading extra credit, please let your teacher know so that a copy can be made available for you to pick up at Richland.  The math and science paper/pencil are included in this document.  **Note, there is ONLY a paper/pencil option for science.

All online and paper/pencil work must be completed and turned into the teacher no later than 11:59 p.m. on May 11.

For more information, you can visit the district's website:  Coronavirus Facts

If your child wants to enter the coloring contest, please send me their coloring page no later than 11a.m.

Unfortunately, we will not be able to do our Cornelius Class Chit Chat tomorrow.  The main purpose for doing this is to see the students and to catch up.  The district will only allow us to use Teams, and only 4 can be on a video call at a time.  We have been averaging 35ish students on our calls, and it would not be feasible to break this into groups of 4.  Please know that I am as heartbroken over this as you and your child.  I love getting to see their faces each week, but I also feel it is important to not go against the district in this regard.

Wednesday, April 22nd is Earth Day.  In years past, I take my class around the Richland campus and we pick up trash.  Sadly, we usually pick up 2-3 large lawn and leaf bags.  I would encourage you and your children to do something like this if the weather permits.  It is nice to get out of the house and do something good for your neighborhood!

I have attached a couple of coloring sheets.  The students LOVE doing a coloring contest, so if you will send me your child's finished coloring page, I will post them for students to vote on.  The 5 that get the most votes will win popcorn and a drink.  I will bring the bag of microwave popcorn and a drink and put it in your mailbox.

DO NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE COLORING PAGE.  I will know whose drawing is whose by the email address.  I want voting to be anonymous.

Send completed Earth Day coloring pages to me no later than Monday, April 27th at 11:00am.

Voting will end Wednesday, April 29th at 11:00am.

I will deliver popcorn and drinks on Thursday, April 30th.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!  I know for me, the weekend and the weekdays kind of run together.  I try to keep a fairly normal routine during the week, but it is still weird to not go back to work!!

Here is the link for tomorrow's Cornelius Class Chit Chat.  Like I mentioned last week, we have been asked to not use Zoom for live interactions with students.  I am trying GoToMeeting.com.  I have tried with with a few friends and it worked well, but this will be my first time to try with a bunch of students.  Like many of you, I am having to learn this new normal and adapt each day.  I hope this goes as well as our Zoom meetings, but I ask that you bear with me.

In addition to our daily reading, I would love to see students continue with Iready reading and math lessons.  These are lessons geared for your child's learning level and are beneficial in this time of distance learning.

Don't forget that your kids can also do IXL and read books on Epic.  These are all great sites to provide extra support to your child.

It has been such a joy talking with some of you while conducting the district's survey.  I have learned new things about your families and it just felt good to hear how everyone is doing.  I miss you and your children so much!  Thank you for taking the time out of your day to visit with me.  If you chose to complete the survey, but would like to say hello, please feel free to call me.  I am open to hearing from you.  901-870-4584

Several questions came up about registration over the last couple of days.  Everyone does need to register their child.  You do this through Power School.  You will click on the register/update link and then you will make changes or verify the information.  A phone call and text was sent about this earlier today.

Some of you have also asked about refunds from the Discovery Park field trip.  At this time, we are unsure as to when refunds will be given or how this will happen.  Like teachers and students, the financial secretary is not allowed into the building, so refunds can't be given at this time.  When I have information, I will share it with you.

Here is the link for chapter 10.  I have LOVED seeing your child's illustrations of Winnie seeing Jesse for the 1st time.  Many of you have sent sweet emails saying how much you and your child are enjoying the book.  I think reading a book with your child is one of the best things to do.  Reading with my boys was one of my favorite things to do when they were younger and my husband and I still do this.  Everything is better when you can experience it with someone and talk about it together.  Your children are no different.

Chapter 10 has another scene that would be great to illustrate.  If your child enjoyed the 1st optional illustration, they will enjoy this one also.  Just like many students did with Monday's drawing, they can draw the Tuck’s house – starting on page 50 with “So she was unprepared…” and ending with “…surveying the mess approvingly.” on page 52.   I would love to see what students draw, so feel free to send me pictures of their illustrations.  As with any high quality work, I would encourage students to color their illustration.

Here is the link to the Socrative quiz for chapters 6-10.  All questions are multiple choice this time.  On the last quiz there were a couple of short answer questions.  These showed up as incorrect for students if their answer was not EXACTLY like the answer recorded by Ms. Piliere.  However, when I read over their answers, they were correct.  Students should not take the quiz until they have read through chapter 10.

Thanks to those that were able to complete the survey online.  I still have a few folks to call.  I am working in calls between conference call IEPs, school meetings, online school work, and my family, so it is taking some time to get through our roster.

I am sure you have heard by now that the decision has been made to close school for the remainder of the school year.  Like you, I am heart broken that we will not be back together this year.  I don't think any of us saw this happening.  However, keep up the great work that you are doing.  I know it is hard to balance everything, but just know that there is no time limit on any of this work.  Do it as you can.  Don't feel like your child will be behind going into 5th grade.  All 4th graders are experiencing the same thing and 5th grade teachers know that your child only had 3 quarters of their 4th grade year.  We are all in this together and we will work together to close the academic gaps.  I am EXTREMELY thankful that this didn't happen in the fall and that we were able to complete the bulk of the curriculum.

Here is the link for chapter 9.  I have enjoyed seeing student's drawings and seeing their posts about chapter 7.  Most students feel like the story is fake because they think that no one can live forever.  I agree that the story is fiction, but I am asking if students feel that the Tucks are lying to Winnie or if they feel that the Tucks really are a family that can never die.  Also, the responses are 50/50 on whether students would choose to live an eternal life and drink from the spring.  Half say there is too much life to live and they want to experience all the stages of life, and the other half think it would be neat to freeze time where they are!!  I wish more than anything I could have this conversation with them in person!!!

I hope you have all enjoyed your Easter and Passover weekend.  Until today, the weather was beautiful!  I know that my family was able to get outside and play some games in the yard, enjoying the beautiful weather.

The district has asked that we not use Zoom any longer due to some security concerns.  Zoom claims to have increased security and fixed the issues, but the district still feels it is best to stop using Zoom.  We will do one more Zoom meeting on Monday because I have not found another platform that will support all of us getting together to chat and I feel it is important for us to stay in contact with one another.  I am open to suggestions if some of you use other platforms in a business setting.  I want something where we can all see each other in a gallery view and are able to interact with one another.  Many of the other platforms I have looked at allow a limited number of participants and do not have a gallery view.  I will also continue to use Zoom for my recorded lessons because I have paid for the plan through April and this is not one of the security features that was a concern.

I meant to include this in Friday's email, but I forgot!    In Friday's reading, the author was very descriptive in her writing, creating a beautiful picture of what Winnie saw in the wood.  As an optional task for the students, I would like for them to draw what the author describes.  Draw a picture of Jesse by the spring – starting on page 25 with “There was a clearing…” and ending with …and their eyes met.” on page 26.  I would love to see what students draw, so feel free to send me pictures of their illustrations.  As with any high quality work, I would encourage students to color their illustration.  This is a similar assignment to what we did with the Bud, not Buddy at home assignment in December.

Here is the link for Monday's reading of chapter 6.  If your child has not read the prologue and chapters 1-5, they will need to do that before starting with this week's reading.  In addition, if your child has not taken the online quiz, I would like for them to take it to assess how we are doing on chapters 1-5.

Monday, April 6, 2020

I hope you have had a great weekend.  We certainly can't complain about the weather.  My goodness, it has been beautiful!

After lots of thinking, I have decided to record the Zoom readings for Tuck Everlasting.  I am hearing from friends with younger children that Zoom meetings are becoming more and more common, causing parents and students to be overwhelmed with all that needs to be done.  The last thing that I want is to add more stress to all that you have going on.  By doing it this way, you guys can make learning work when it is good for your family.   Click on the following link for Monday's reading.

Video Conferencing, Web Conferencing, Webinars, Screen Sharing

I have decided that with the book study, we will only focus on Tuck Everlasting.  There will not be ReadWorks, CommonLit, orange vocabulary, and other reading activities.  However, I will send 5 recorded readings this week - one each day, instead of 3 lessons.  I record the night before because I know that some of you like to do school work 1st thing.  With each reading, there will be some vocabulary and comprehension questions that students can answer in the packet.  I go over everything in the reading.  When I send Friday's reading on Thursday night, I will also send directions for an online quiz to assess the Prologue through Chapter 5.  As you already know, this is not a grade, just a way to see how everyone is doing with the comprehension of the chapters.  Students will be able to use their packets and their books on the quiz.

I have attached the packet that we will be doing.  Do not be overwhelmed by the packet, I will guide students as to what to complete and when.  In this packet are the answers if you would like to check behind your student as they work.

Attached is a COVID-19 time capsule activity packet that your child may want to complete.

The district is doing a Spirit Week, so if you have Zoom classes, you may want to participate.  Parents, feel free to post pictures of your child dressed each day to the Richland Facebook and Instagram pages.  We would love to see your child showing their spirit!!

We will still meet Monday at 1:00 for our Zoom Chit Chat.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone then.

I will be doing another grab and go book drive Thursday, April 2nd at 6:00pm.  I will be on the sidewalk between the small parking lot in the front and the big teacher lot.  You can pull up to the curb, I will hand you a book/packet and you will be on your way.  I have only heard from one person asking me to bring a book by their house.  If you need me to do this, please email me with your address and I will run it by sometime on Thursday.

We will start our book study on Monday.  I think I am going to do this when we do our Zoom meeting to chat and catch up.  I think we will start with saying hello, and then move into me reading live.  I will record this meeting for those that can't get on Zoom live during the day.  As with all of this, I am still trying to think of the best way to do this, so if anything changes, I will let you know.

My goodness, what a day!!!  So it started with the fact that my recorded lesson did not screen share correctly and you guys had to listen to me while the screen never changed.  Then while 35 cars were lined up to get their book this afternoon, I locked my keys in my car... WITH THE BOOKS!!!  In my 27 years of driving, this has only happened twice, today being the second.  THANK YOU for being patient and so understanding.  On the positive side, I got to see 35 of you guys today... and I loved it!

It was also great seeing so many of you this morning on our Zoom meeting!!!  I think we had 38, including Mrs. McNary, Mrs. Beckwith, and Mrs. Bounds!!  It does my heart good to see your sweet faces.  We will meet again next Monday.

I will do one more grab and go book drive.  I will be at the school at 6:00 on Thursday evening.  Hopefully this will work for those of you that are still going to work each day.  If you are unable to make this, but still want a book, I will be happy to bring one by your house and put it in your mailbox.  Just let me know if you can't make this Thursday's grab and go.

Some of you have reached out saying there was a problem with the Sadlier site.  Try this one and see if it works.  I have been able to get it to work on my computer, but we will see.  If this ends up being more trouble than its worth, we won't do this again.

Attached are the practice pages that we would typically do for homework each night in the orange book.  I recommend students do one page each day with a parent looking over the student's work.  Ms. Piliere is working on a Kahoot game to send out for families to play together.  I will send that out on Thursday.

I have also attached a multiple meaning words worksheet where common words are used figuratively.  The answer document is in the same attachment.

There is another Drops in the Bucket attached also.

I have enjoyed seeing many of your sentences that you wrote last week, so I thought that would be another fun activity.  You are welcome to type your sentences and send them to me.  Please know that sending your work to me is optional.  I am giving a list of words and a part of speech.  Try using the word as the part of speech to make a 4th grade sentence.  If you want to do extra, you can always use each of these words as a noun and a verb to double your sentence writing.

break - noun

hammer - verb

dance - noun

nail - verb

punch - noun

t has been great hearing from some of you!  Some of you have sent some neat resources, so I want to share a couple of things with everyone else.

We are still scheduled to have a Zoom meeting to chat and catch up Monday at noon.

Also, I will be at the school Monday at 3:00 for those that would like to come and get a Tuck Everlasting book and work packet.  Please do not start the book or the packet until we start as a class on Monday, April 6th.  I will be on the sidewalk on Rich Road, between the small parking lot and the teacher lot.  My hope is that you can drive up, grab a Ziploc of materials, give a friendly wave, and then be on your way.   I ask that you abide by social distancing guide lines as you pick up supplies.  If you do not feel comfortable coming by to grab a book and packet, you are welcome to get a copy of the book on your own and I will send out the packet as we get closer to starting the book study.

Kara's mom in Mrs. Williamson's class shared a Read at Home BINGO.  This is a cute way to encourage more reading at home.  I have logged into Epic and some of you are really taking advantage of that site.  I love it!!!  Don't forget that you can also take AR tests at home right now.  That is a great way to see how well you understood what you read.  Here is another link for online books.  Audible Stories | Audible.com

One great thing about all that we are going through right now is that so many companies are opening their sites to families.  Sadlier Connect is allowing students to get the orange vocabulary book as an ebook right now.  Because of this, one of the online lessons that I will do it Unit 10 in the orange vocabulary book.  To access your free e-book Site License for Sadlier School products, log in to Sadlier Connect at https://SadlierConnect.com/learnfromhomeschool

Username: SadlierStudent

Password: ReadyToLearn!

Once you are on the site, you will scroll down to an orange vocabulary book with a pencil on the cover.

In the online lesson, I read the introduction to the words.  I ask that you look over the definitions after listening to me intro the words.  For Tuesday, I will upload the Completing the Sentence page that we would normally do as Monday's homework.  I will send out the other pages Tuesday.  (The ebook is not the exact same as the one we have as school and does not offer the practice pages.  I will grab a copy of the book at school before we do our book grab.)

I have assigned another ReadWorks article: The Magic of Mime.  Some of you might not know what a mime is, so I have a couple of links for you to see some examples.  This mime uses props and does not have his face painted because he a more modern mime.  Hilarious and Amazing Mime  This is an example of a more traditional mime. MiMo Chispa MiMe Flea  There is nothing you need to do with these videos.  They are just examples, relating to the ReadWorks story.

As of noon on Tuesday, I have graded the assignment that I posted on ReadWorks.  I made comments on many of the answers, so look back at what I typed.  If there is not a grade on your assignment, it is because I made a comment and want you to change something.

In this lesson, I focus more on multiple meaning words.  Once you watch the video, this list of words will make more sense.  I would love to see students use these words in a sentence in two different ways.  In the lesson, I talk about what students' sentences should look like.

stamp, pet, produce, bat, wave

Below are the directions for how to access Epic.  I feel that students should be reading for at least 20 minutes each day.

I have attached another Drops in the Bucket, as well as an answer key for Monday's sheet.

I will probably do one more post this week.  I am also going to create a new page on my website and put everything in one place so you don't have to go back through emails.

I sent an email last week about doing some online lessons through Zoom, but after talking with several other teachers, I decided to make some changes to my original plan.  Instead of doing a live stream where we had the potential for 65 students to chime in, I decided to record myself and send the link out.  I am doing this for a couple of reasons: 1 - There are a lot of concerns with how to handle so many students in a live setting.  2 - This way, families can watch when it is convenient for them and replay it if necessary.

On my next video, I will talk some about the packets that the district has sent out.  Some of these lessons have been completed in class, so the packets may not be the best option for every child.

After watching the video, you can refer to this email for the activities that I discussed.
