To: Parents of students entering fourth grade in August 2020

Dear Parents,

We want to welcome your child to 4th grade. Everyone loves summer, which is full of good times and fun memories.  While we agree this is true, we don’t want students to experience learning losses when they don’t read over the summer.  In order to maintain and improve reading skills over our break, we are requiring that your child read at least 2 chapter books this summer, one fiction and one nonfiction.

Scholastic has a very good, grade appropriate series titled, “Who Was….?”, "Who Is...?", and "What Was/Is...?".  Students can choose any book on an individual or event that is appropriate for their interest and reading level.

After reading the nonfiction book, your child needs to write a one-page summary of the book.   This should be a one page, written report.  We ask that this not be typed and no longer than a page and a half.   This will count as a composition grade and will be due Friday, August 21, 2020.

The second book we are asking the students to read is Frindle, which is a chapter book from the award winning author, Andrew Clements.  We will take a test on this book Friday, August 21, 2020.

We hope you’ll encourage your child to read as much as possible this summer.  We feel this is crucial for your child to be a strong, confident reader.  It is expected that the summer reading be completed before school starts back.

We are looking forward to seeing you in August for a wonderful 4th grade year.

                                                                                                                                                Sincerely,

                                                                                                                                                4th grade teachers
